Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump, Product Overview

lansinoh manual breast pump reviewThe Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump is easy to assemble and easy to use. It is perfect for occasional use and on-the-go pumping. You can use it anywhere or even bring it along with you when you travel or go on road trips.

You can also easily switch from two pumping modes – stimulation and expression, to help in the let-down and for a more natural way of pumping. It also comes with two sizes of comfort fit flanges, standard (25mm) and large (30.5mm) to help with the right suction.

The wide neck bottle makes milk transfer easy. The pump is also compatible with the Lansinoh Momma Bottles and natural wave nipple so you can pump, store, and feed with the same bottle.

Convenient, Portable and Discreet

When I started breastfeeding, my nipples were so sore because I couldn’t get my baby to latch well. I was terrified when I saw them cracked and bleeding. I found it so hard to breastfeed because it was so painful! Couldn’t help but tear up each time.

So the nurses recommended that I use nipple shields to help me sort things out since I wasn’t keen to use formula. It worked and I was so happy. I kept using it and realised that I had to wean my baby off nipple shields at a certain point.

It was hard and I kept trying. And I honestly think that it was expressing milk that helped me! It helped elongate my nipples again and because of that, my baby was able to latch well.

I used the Lansinoh manual breast pump and the Medela Swing breast pump alternately. At this point, I really fell in love with the Lansinoh manual breast pump!

It was so convenient! It didn’t require batteries or electric outlets. I can even use it late at night or in the wee hours of the morning when everyone was sleeping because it was so quiet.

When we travelled out of the country, I also brought it with me since it was so lightweight and portable. It is so easy to pump milk anywhere because it’s so small and handy. I will definitely bring it with me again the next time we travel. I like how it can easily fit in my bag.

It is Comfortable and Allows for One-Handed Pumping

Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump (new and improved version)

I love that it has a good suction and it feels comfortable. When I had so much milk, my engorged breasts hurt when they weren’t emptied during breastfeeding. I really loved using this pump and I would feel so relieved after.

What I like most about the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump was that I can control suction and speed. Unlike the Medela Swing, it was timed and controlled by a machine. This one feels more natural!

I like looking at the milk squirting from the milk ducts and seeing it all flow to the bottle. So I just press the handle again when I see that there’s no more milk coming out, and I continue expressing. I also tend to readjust it so that it can also empty other milk ducts.

It is also easy to assemble and use that I can multi-task a bit since I only need one hand to pump.

However in my experience, if you use it for a long period of time, it wears down your wrist and gives you a bit of hand fatigue (even if it has an ergonomic handle).

You Can Use the Same Bottle to Pump, Store, and Feed

lansinoh manual breast pump reviewIt is compatible with the Lansinoh Momma Bottles with natural wave nipples so you can use the same bottle to pump, store, and feed your baby. They are actually good bottles and you can get a set of three for $19.99.

If budget is a concern, manual pumps are definitely cheaper than electric pumps. I do think that the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump makes for a good back-up pump.

When my baby turned six months, I tested the Medela Swing and the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump to see where I can get more breast milk. Hands down, I was able to get twice as much milk using the Medela Swing.

With Fewer Parts, It is Easier to Clean

Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump (old, discontinued version)

I used the old, discontinued version of the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump, and it’s pretty much the same as the new and improved version except that the new one has:

  • Two phases which simulate baby’s natural sucking pattern (simulation phase enables a shallow, rapid pumping rhythm to initiate milk flow and expression phase facilitates slower, deeper pumping for improved milk flow)
  • Lesser parts and is easier to clean

With the old version, cleaning takes a bit of an effort. You have to take it apart completely when you wash it after each use (remember, it has more parts than the new version). Otherwise, milk collects under the silicone diaphragm on the top.

Here’s a quick video on how to clean the new and improved Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump:

In Conclusion, It Is a Comfortable and Handy Back-up Pump for Occasional Use

I recommend that you get the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump as a back-up pump. I love that it gives you a natural feeling (natural sucking rhythm unlike a machine) when you pump. You can control the suction and speed, which is why there are a number of breastfeeding mothers who prefer a manual pump.

It is also perfect for travel and pumping late at night. If you want to build a milk stash, you may be better off with a Medela Swing since you can get more breast milk within the same amount of time.

I think breast feeding is very important for a number of reasons not least, it is the most natural food for a baby.
It is also easier than messing about with warming bottles and sterilizing etc. I was impressed with the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump and I will recommend to to my readers and send them to your site. This was an excellent review and I am sure there are many mothers out there who would benefit from reading it.

      Hi Raquel,

Thank you for your detailed personal review. When you are having difficulty nursing, it is so tempting to just give up and switch to formula. The reinforcement to keep trying with personally recommended suggestions is very encouraging. I especially like being able to pump, store and feed all with the same bottle.

Great to hear this, Bethany. You’re right about the temptation to give up. If the support system is not that strong (especially if there are reasons that hinder you from breastfeeding), its easy to just call it quits when it gets too painful. Of course its different if there are medical reasons. But if there’s none, just keep at it and persistence will eventually bear fruit.

On another note, cleaning too many bottles adds up to the long list of things you need to do, so anything to help with efficiency is a wonderful idea! If you can pump, store, and feed in the same bottle, why not?

Thank you for such a open and detailed review site on everything breastfeeding. I think its so brave of you to start a website on this despite all the stigma about public breastfeeding. I find it useful for my future wife to reference and I am sure it will help dispel some anxiety new mothers have about breastfeeding their child! You have so many great insights on breastfeeding! Keep it up!

        • Raquel says:

Thanks Jessen! As long as you believe that there is nothing wrong about moms breastfeeding in public, then there really shouldn’t be any stigma to begin with (this also applies when they are pumping milk in public). They shouldn’t be frowned up especially if moms are covered up,
